3.8 Bad News

When Ryan starts to kiss her in the hot-tub his father installed a few days ago, she lets him, but he can feel something is wrong. Since they were teens, the bond between them has only grown stronger, it feels as though they are on that one frequency no one else is on, and they just "know" things. Ever since Rafe has been born there hasn't been a week she didn't have to go to the hospital, Ryan tries to go with her as much as he can, but he can't keep taking days off all the time.
Ryan pulls back, leans his forehead against hers and closes his eyes, "what are you not telling me?" "nothing, well, not something that matters..." He opens his eyes and looks at her, "if you're not going to be honest with me, then what do we have left?" He lets her go and leaves the tub to get dressed. He knows that the doctors said they couldn't find anything, but he can't shake of the feeling something is horribly wrong, and he knows she feels it too.

When Satya follows Ryan inside she only needs to look into his eyes to see that he is worried about her. She holds him close as tears start to form in his eyes, angrily he tries to rub them away, "I need you to be honest with me Satya, I really do...what's going on?"

"I don't want to worry you, the doctors said there's nothing wrong with me..." "That's bull Satya, I know you feel it too, and if you stop telling me what is going on with you, all that's left for me to do is guess." Satya looks down at his chest, unsure about what she is thinking, but she says it anyway, "What if our feelings are wrong, don't you think the doctors should know what they are talking about? What if we're just over thinking this, bad eyesight hasn't killed anyone yet..."
Ryan strokes her cheek, then takes her chin and lifts up her face so has no other choice but to look him into the eyes. He knows she can't lie to him when she looks him in the eyes, "but it isn't just bad eyesight anymore is it?" As Satya tries to look down at his chest again, he lets go of her chin and puts his forehead against hers in an attempt to hide his despair. The hesitation and looking away says it all, "Tell me the truth now please, I don't want you to protect me, I want to be there for you, you don't have to do this on your own. I love you for crying out loud!" Tears well up in Satya's eyes and start to fall down her cheeks, "I'm so scared Ryan, I'm so scared and I don't know what to do about it, all the doctors keep saying is that they can't find anything, that I'm healthy, and I keep having the feeling that they are horribly wrong." "What about your dad? What does he say about all this?" "I don't know actually, he thinks it is still the bad eyesight, and he has been so busy at work, he just got promoted to infectious disease researcher..." Ryan sighs and tries to look her in the eyes again, "don't you think your dad has the right to know what is going on with his only daughter? Besides, infectious diseases is one discipline that hasn't been looking at you, all the other had their chance, give you dad one as well, maybe he can surprise us and figure out what this is..."
As she looks in his eyes, she notices the tears in his, as she caresses his cheek, she slowly nods. Ryan takes her hand of his cheek, looks her into the eyes and says, "no more secrets okay? we're going to do this together!" "I promise, I love you so much." When they finally let go of each other, Ryan calls his father in law to come over for a chat while Satya goes to take a nap.

When Akhill arrives Ryan decides to talk to him on his own first, he doesn't want to wake her up just yet, and Akhil can ask some awkward questions every now and then. He doesn't want Satya to get to upset by this conversation. "So how are you and my daughter doing? Any new family members on the horizon perhaps?" Akhil asks out of the blue. Ryan swallows hard, talking about awkward questions, "no dad, I think we need to talk..."
When he finally takes the time to look at Ryans face, Akhil realizes something is wrong, "I'm sorry Ryan, are things not going well? Are you and Satya fighting? You are not breaking up are you?" Ryan hastily assures him that he and Satya are okay, they are still very much in love, "we would love to work on a new family member if it were up to us..." he manages to say before his voice breaks. "Talk to me Ryan, what is going on?" he almost demands when he sees how hard this is for Ryan. A nervous feeling starts to overcome him as he realizes this was not the nice little chit chat over diner he expected this to be.

"Do you remember when we first told you Satya's eyesight became bad?" Ryan asks his father in law, "yes I remember, it was right after the birth of Rafe, doctors said they couldn't find anything and not to worry about it." "yeah, it's just that, the issue with her eyesight had already started in the beginning of her pregnancy, and in the last few months, she started to have more symptoms." As Ryan watches Akhil's face turn pale with every word he speaks, he rushes to finish, "the doctors are at a loss, they can't find anything to explain her complaints and keep saying she is in good health, but we both feel there is more to it then they say...they refuse to do more exams, they say all has been done..." Akhil finishes his sentence "and with my latest promotion, you were hoping I could open up some doors?" Ryan looks his father in law directly in the eye, "no dad, because every bloody doctor in that hospital has already looked at her, prodded and poked her, nobody could find an explanation, the only discipline that hasn't had a go at her, is infectious diseases...we were hoping perhaps you could figure out what is wrong with her." Akhil lets out a deep sigh, fighting between his worries for his daughter and his professional look at the situation. He never realized how hard these situations were for the people he treated, and now he is confronted with it himself. But at least he is in the position to help out, even if it might result to nothing.
"You've got to give me a list of symptoms to begin with..." Ryan didn't know he was holding his breath until he let it out when he heard his father in law say those words, quickly he starts to sum up the things that have been bothering Satya for the last few months, "there's the bad eyesight, she describes it as though looking through a tunnel with strokes of light shining through the darkness. Then there's the backaches, I'm working on our own bathroom right now, so she can take hot baths whenever she wants without disturbing my parents or Rafe, but hot baths only help for a short while. Also since a few weeks there's the bleeding..." Akhil suddenly looks up, and Ryan can see something is bothering him, "describe the bleeding for me please?" "when Satya bumps into something, or cuts herself or whatever, she starts to bleed, even when we would just get a bruise, Satya will get an open wound, and it takes several bandages before the bleeding stops." Akhil looks worried. "why didn't she tell me this before Ryan? and why isn't she here telling me this right now?" Ryan looks down at the table again, ashamed to see how much this hurts his father in law, "she believes she has to protect us from worries, but I think she's scared, she's scared of what is going on, but she is also scared to see us worried, or to see us hurt inside."

Akhil tries to hide his feelings when he continues on "tell me about your honeymoon, what did you guys do?" Ryan can't help himself but wonder, "what does our honeymoon have to do with this?" "you asked an infectious disease specialist to help you out, I need to know many things, just answer my questions."
Ryan tries to figure out what is going on in Akhil's head, he heard the sad tone in which those words were said, it was as if he knew where this was going to, and it wasn't good.
"I'd have to get the photographs to know exactly what we did, but we spend most of the time in that tomb..."

Boy calls for them to grab a plate, and Ryan starts to tell his father in law every detail he can remember about their honeymoon. "And while we were looking for a place to put up the tent, Satya discovered some sort of chest in a hidden passage. And straight forward as she is, she of course had to open it up..."

Nearly choking on his food Akhil asks "she did what?" Ryan looks up, "she opened it...and then she started to cough and waved here hands in front of her face. According to what she said there was quit a lot of dust in that chest and she got some in her face, well it was disappointing anyway, because the chest was completely empty." Ryan kept talking about the rest of the honeymoon, but Akhil was not listening anymore. As he retained more pieces to the puzzle his mind began to wander towards this one documentation he came across when he was still an intern.

While finishing his plate he looks at his son in law, and just does not know how to tell him what he is thinking, he needs to look at that documentation again. So he gets up from the table, interrupting Ryan in his story as his daughter just came up the stairs. Akhil looks at her, tears welling in his eyes, he hugs her, almost squeezes her and then runs off.

Satya sits down at the table, "where is dad going?" Boy decides it's best to leave his son and wife alone for the moment. Unlike his son, he did recognize the look on Akhil's face, and he knows that whatever Akhil learned from this conversation, it will probably be bad news.

Ryan looks at his wife, "I think we have to be strong today love, I bet you're father will be back before the day comes to an end."

This sucks, I had a hard time writing this, there's so many things I want to bring across to you all as readers, but I can't seem to find the proper English translations for what I want to say.

  1. Great chapter! An Infectious Disease Specialist, it kind of reminds me of Dr. House. (Who I love.) I'm so worried about Satya though! I hope she'll be okay. And Ryan is so sweet and caring about this whole situation.

  3. Way to break my heart. : ( I feel more sorry for Ryan though. It's hard to be strong for someone you love when they won't tell you anything.

  4. Oh dear, what has Satya given herself by opening that chest? I do hope her father can come up with a treatment for it
